What is a Stocks and Shares ISA?

An ISA is an Individual Savings Account, which were originally set up by the Government in 1999 to encourage people to save and invest.

It is an excellent tax efficient ‘wrapper’ that can hold investments such as unit trusts, other collectives such as OEIC’s, shares and cash.

They are a very popular way to hold investments, as they provide the investor with excellent long-term tax benefits, as well as flexibility over what investments you choose to hold.

Hence a stocks and shares ISA is not an investment in itself, but the tax efficient wrapper that holds your chosen investments.
